***PLEASE REMEMBER***
Turn in your flag contracts!!
Congratulations to our own Bernie Brogan on his re-election as Commander of American Legion Don Gentile Post 532. Nice to see that others recognize the same great Commander that we recognize!
The April 22nd meeting with Penn National and City Councilman Mike Mentel went well. There were a number of community groups who sent representatives and the meeting was quite informative. Whether you agree or disagree with the Casino, it will be built in Columbus. The majority of those in attendance were interested in how the passage of Issue 2 would guarantee that sufficient funds would be available not only to Columbus, but specifically how they would benefit the Hilltop and surrounding area.
K-Kids!
Hilltop Kiwanis is buzzing with excitement over the recent startup of our K-Kids program at West Broad Elementary School. The first two meetings have gone exceptionally well. The kids have nominated officers for their club and have chosen to participate in the cleanup of West Broad Street as one of their big projects this year. Go K-Kids!
Patriotic Pride!!
Our Patriotic Pride Flag project got the biggest boost ever from the VFW and American Legion. The Commander of the VFW at Harris and Eakin, and Bernie Brogan, Commander of the American Legion Don Gentile Post 532 invited Kiwanis to speak at their Board meetings regarding the Patriotic Pride project. After explaining the project to the respective clubs, each not only decided to help us sell the contracts to the community, but have agreed to take one each of the five flag holidays to put the flag out at the homes who contract with us. We can never thank our veterans enough for what they have done. Fly your flag high and proudly and if you see a veteran, make sure to let them know how much we appreciate them. If you would like to rent a flag and help our children, please look for the Patriotic Pride Project tab to the left. Click on that tab and it will take you to a page that tells you about the project. There is a DONATE button at the top left where you can purchase a flag.
Baseball was scheduled to begin at Rhodes Park on April 17th. We were ready to go! Hot dogs, check. Buns, check. Ice and drinks, check. Snacks, check. Helpers, check. Trailer and supplies, check. Baseball teams.......wait! Where WERE the baseball teams?
As we found out after we had everything ready to go, the City of Columbus had not issued a permit to use the diamond for the kids. Let's see if we can't make that happen. We've lost lots of ball fields with the rebuilding of the elementary schools. We really need the space at Rhodes Park. If you have any connections with the Parks and Recreation Department, please let President Vicki know.
